Aaron Carr, the founder of nonprofit Housing Rights Initiative, told The Real Deal that his organization uncovered the alleged violation and put the tenants in touch with law firm Himmelstein, McConnell, Gribben, Donoghue & Joseph.

“Aaron Carr, a former state legislative aide who recently launched the Housing Rights Initiative to help tenants research dodgy landlord actions, calls MCIs and Individual Apartment Improvements — a similar, largely unmonitored program governing rehabs that aren’t building-wide — ‘the Trojan horses of real estate,’ allowing landlords to improve their own properties under the guise of preserving affordable housing.”

Aaron Carr, Founder of Housing Rights Initiative, discussing NYC’s affordable housing crisis on Bronx Talk.

“Aaron Carr, founder of the Housing Rights Initiative, might not have been as artistically inclined as some of Cox’s work proved to be, but he certainly demonstrated himself to be an artist when it came to digital presentation. I mean, if there were a Pulitzer Prize for Powerpoint presentations he’d definitely have a few by now.”

“Aaron Carr, from the Housing Rights Initiative, which seeks to protect tenants and preserve affordable housing, applauded Rentlogic’s ability to consolidate information that’s often hidden or hard to decipher. He said it was ‘incredibly needed’ in a city were so many tenants spend an ‘outlandish’ amount of their income on rent. ‘This creates a user-friendly platform to make informed decisions, which is especially important in a city where half of all renters are rent burdened — paying 30 percent or more of their income on rent,’ Carr said. ‘The expectations are unfair that renters in their busy lives should learn real estate law and the real estate realm, in general, to figure this stuff out themselves.’ “
